If you’ve been dealing with pain that just won’t go away — despite rest, physical therapy, injections, or medication — shockwave therapy may be the piece you’ve been missing. At Vitality Chiropractic, we offer this advanced, non-invasive treatment for patients whose chronic pain hasn’t responded the way they’d hoped to more traditional approaches.

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy (also called Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy, or ESWT) uses high-energy acoustic waves delivered to targeted areas of the body. These waves stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms in tissue that has become stuck in a chronic pain cycle — the kind of tissue that stopped healing on its own months or even years ago.

It sounds intense. In practice, most patients describe a strong pulsing sensation at the treatment site, followed by significant reduction in pain and improvement in function in the days and weeks that follow.

Why Chronic Pain Doesn’t Always Heal on Its Own

Acute injuries heal in a predictable sequence: inflammation, tissue repair, remodeling. But in some injuries — particularly those involving tendons, plantar fascia, or calcified tissue — this process gets interrupted. The inflammation resolves but true repair never follows. The tissue becomes fibrotic and poorly vascularized. Without fresh blood flow, the healing process simply stalls.

This is why some injuries become chronic: not because they’re severe, but because the body lost its healing momentum. Rest and time won’t restart it. That’s where shockwave therapy comes in.

What Shockwave Treats Well

  • Plantar fasciitis — One of the strongest evidence bases for shockwave. Particularly effective in cases where stretching and orthotics haven’t delivered relief.
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) — Chronic tendon pain at the elbow that hasn’t responded to rest or cortisone.
  • Shoulder pain and calcific tendinitis — Highly effective at breaking down calcium deposits in the shoulder, often avoiding the need for surgery.
  • Achilles tendinopathy — Chronic Achilles pain responds very well, especially in runners and active patients.
  • Hip flexor and IT band issues — Common in athletes and active adults, these respond well when addressed early.
  • Chronic low back pain — Used alongside chiropractic adjustments, shockwave can accelerate recovery from soft tissue components of back pain.

What to Expect

A shockwave session at Vitality takes about 15–20 minutes. We apply a gel to the treatment area and deliver the acoustic pulses directly to the site of pain using a handheld applicator. There’s no anesthesia needed, no downtime, and no recovery period.

Most patients notice improvement after 3–5 sessions, spaced about a week apart. Some experience a temporary increase in soreness for 24–48 hours after their first treatment — this is normal and indicates the healing response has been triggered.

A Powerful Complement to Chiropractic Care

Shockwave therapy and chiropractic adjustments work particularly well together. Adjustments address the structural and neurological components of pain, while shockwave accelerates healing in the soft tissue. For patients with complex, layered pain patterns, combining both often produces results that neither approach achieves alone.

If you’ve been managing chronic pain and want to know whether shockwave therapy might be right for you, we’d love to have that conversation.
