Neck Pain From An Unexpected Source
Recently, Ann, one of our favorite long term wellness patients came in complaining of neck pain. She was especially concerned because she was about to depart on vacation and didn’t want pain to ruin it for her!
Ann had been attending several of her granddaughter’s volleyball games. She likes to sit up front and we determined that the back and forth head movements from following each point was too much for her to handle. It turns out you don’t always need to play sports to get a sports injury! A couple adjustments and Ann was feeling good again — in time for her vacation. And, a recommendation to move back a bit during the games should help her to avoid future strains.
If you’ve been waking up with neck tension or dealing with headaches that just won’t quit, stress may be the culprit — and not just in the way you think.
Your Nervous System Is Keeping Score
The nervous system doesn’t distinguish between “work deadline stress” and “physical threat stress.” Both activate your fight-or-flight response, which causes your muscles to contract and your shoulders to rise toward your ears. Do this for eight hours a day, five days a week, and you’ve got a recipe for chronic neck pain, tension headaches, and upper back tightness.
The Subluxation-Stress Loop
Here’s what most people don’t know: spinal misalignments (subluxations) can actually amplify your body’s stress response. When vertebrae in your cervical spine are out of alignment, they put pressure on the nerves that regulate everything from muscle tension to sleep quality to immune function. Fixing the spine doesn’t just reduce pain — it helps your entire system downregulate.
Tech Neck Makes It Worse
The average person checks their phone 96 times a day. Every degree your head tilts forward adds significant weight load to your cervical spine. By the time your head is at a 45-degree angle, your neck is supporting the equivalent of 49 pounds. Add workplace stress on top of that, and it’s no surprise that neck pain is one of the top reasons San Jose residents seek chiropractic care.
What Chiropractic Care Actually Does for Stress
Regular adjustments have been shown to:
- Reduce cortisol (the primary stress hormone) levels
- Improve sleep quality
- Decrease muscle tension and headache frequency
- Support better nervous system regulation overall
