Why Stress Gets Stuck in Your Body (And What to Do About It)

← Back to Blog

You know the feeling — a stressful conversation, and suddenly your shoulders are at your ears. A difficult week at work, and your neck is in knots by Friday. But stress does not just create temporary tension. For many people, it gets encoded into the body in lasting ways. At Vitality Chiropractic in San Jose, we work with this phenomenon every day.

The Physiology of Stuck Stress

When your nervous system perceives a threat — whether it is a car swerving toward you or a difficult email from your boss — it activates the sympathetic stress response. Cortisol and adrenaline flood your system. Muscles tense. Digestion slows. Your heart rate rises. This is normal and healthy as a short-term response.

The problem is when the threat passes but the nervous system does not fully reset. The tension remains in the muscles. The stress hormones stay elevated. The body stays in a low-grade state of vigilance. Over time, this becomes the baseline — and it manifests as chronic pain, fatigue, digestive issues, poor sleep, and anxiety.

How the Spine Gets Involved

The muscles that respond to stress — particularly the paraspinal muscles along the spine — hold tension in specific patterns. This tension pulls vertebrae out of alignment, creating subluxations that then put pressure on the very nerves that regulate the stress response. It becomes a self-reinforcing loop: stress creates subluxation, subluxation amplifies the stress response, which creates more tension.

Breaking the Cycle

Chiropractic adjustments interrupt this cycle by restoring proper spinal alignment and reducing nerve irritation. But for patients where stress is a significant driver, we also use Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) and QNRT to address the neurological patterns maintaining the stress response.

This integrated approach — structural correction plus neurological reset — produces results that neither approach achieves alone. Many patients describe it as finally being able to relax for the first time in years.
