School’s out, the sun is out, and your family’s schedule just got a whole lot busier. Summer in San Jose is beautiful — hiking, biking, trips to the beach, sports camps, backyard barbecues. But all that activity also brings a unique set of physical demands on your spine and nervous system. Here’s how to enjoy every bit of it without paying for it later.
The Summer Spine Traps
A few very common summer habits quietly wreak havoc on spinal health — for both kids and adults:
Long Road Trips
Hours in the car are rough on your lumbar spine. Static positions, vibration, and lack of movement cause muscles to tighten and spinal joints to stiffen. Plan stops every 90 minutes minimum. When you stop, walk around, stretch your hip flexors, and do a few gentle back extensions before getting back in.
Heavy Day Packs and Coolers
Lugging gear to the beach or the trailhead sounds minor until your back disagrees. Always lift with your legs, not your back. Carry weight centered and close to your body. And if you’re regularly carrying a heavy day pack, make sure the straps are adjusted so the weight sits on your hips, not your shoulders.
Kids and Sports Camps
Summer sports camps are fantastic — but they’re also a significant increase in physical load for kids who’ve been relatively sedentary through the school year. Growing spines are particularly vulnerable to overuse injuries. If your child is in a physically intensive summer program, this is a great time to schedule a pediatric chiropractic check-up.
Sleeping in New Places
Vacation beds and air mattresses are notorious for throwing off sleep quality and spinal support. If you’re waking up stiff from a vacation, it’s probably not just the time zone. A few simple morning stretches can make a real difference.
The Screen Time Trap
Summers can also mean more screen time — and more screen time means more “tech neck.” Kids and adults alike tend to drop into flexed postures when they’re on phones, tablets, or gaming systems. For every inch your head drops forward, you’re adding roughly 10 pounds of load on your cervical spine. Over hours and days, this adds up.
Encourage breaks every 30 minutes. Make it a family habit to look up, roll your shoulders back, and reset your posture.
Hydration and Your Discs
Here’s one that doesn’t get talked about enough: your spinal discs are largely made of water. When you’re dehydrated, those discs lose their ability to cushion the vertebrae above and below them. In the San Jose summer heat, dehydration happens faster than most people realize. Staying well-hydrated isn’t just good for energy — it’s literally keeping your spine healthy.
The Summer Wellness Check-Up
One of the best things you can do for your whole family this summer is schedule a chiropractic check-up — especially at the start of the season. Dr. Dave and Dr. Grace can assess how your spine is holding up, identify any areas of concern before they become pain, and give you a personalized plan for staying active and well all summer long.
Kids are especially good candidates for a summer check-in. Growing bodies change fast. A growing spine that goes unchecked can develop patterns of misalignment that are much harder to address later.
